Cassidys Pub represents a bygone era of the traditional Irish Pub, where the authentic interiors and decorative schemes have not been supplanted by modern interpretations of the traditional style, an unfortunate occurrence in many public houses.

Cassidys, in particular, has deviated little from the original Victorian pub. Cassidys was a branch of Delahunts, a family of grocers and spirit merchants who owned a number of premises on Camden Street in the 1890’s. Delahunts was immortalised by Joyce in Ulysses, where Lenchan remarks
”Delahunt of Camden Street had the catering and yours truly was chief bottle washer…Lashings of stuff we put up, port wine, sherry and curacao to which we did ample justice.” J.Joyce, Ulysses, p.300

Cassidys is a Victorian pub enclosed in a 1780s house which followed the 18th century of lowering the ground floor to street level and extending it forward fully to occupy the front garden area. The interior of the bar is lit by a high semi circular window, illuminating the décor, including curved mahogany cabinets displaying bric-a-brac.

In the 1940s, the business was sold to Mr. Laurence Caulfield, another tea, wine and spirit merchant. In 1968, Mr. Patrick Cassidy, Vintner, purchased the property. This was the main reason United States President, Mr. Bill Clinton, visited on December 1st 1995 as they are related.
In 1988, Dublin footballer, Fran Ryder bought the pub from Mr. Con McCulloch and in 1999, I myself, Noel Maguire bought the pub.

Inside the door of Cassidys is one of the few remaining cabinets made by the great Noel Purcell, 1900- 1985. Over the years, it has attracted many of the literary greats including James Joyce, Patrick Kavanagh and James Clarence Mangan.
Today, Cassidys is a cosmopolitan but still traditional pub attracting varied clientele, tourists, city shoppers and business people alike. . If you are looking for tradition, heritage and an old world atmosphere, you’ve just found it.
